house in the ‘burbs

the big winner

just a really quick follow-up to my elaborate, dramatic nursery lighting post before we head to brewster tonight (and i am actually bringing my camera for this trip – the floor is installed!)

i ordered this yesterday. not surprisingly, it wasn’t even on my original watch-list! i stalk certain items at urban outfitters waiting for them to go on sale… and in the process, i came across this great deal and it just felt right for the nursery. impulsive, but .. 30 bucks..

i should be a UO ambassador or at least figure out affiliate links… their sales are so good, i can’t stay away.

Plum Bow Scallop Pendant

many updates coming soon: the brewster floor, the painted nursery, a craigslist changing table makeover, and my very first wallpapering project!

also, there is a huge baby girl in my belly and we go to dairy queen a lot.

that’s all. happy weekend!

nursery odds & ends :: tan and triangular

but first… look at this little human my sister made..
he’s pretty cute and perfect and impossibly small. dane was mostly indifferent toward him, but when we let him “hold” him, he had the biggest smile on his face. it was the sweetest thing i’ve ever seen. i think i’ll lose my **** when its his baby sister he’s holding.
now onto the material things…
there has been no progress in the nursery what-so-ever, but i have been snatching up random treasures – all on sale – to eventually use in the new baby’s room. i feel like i should share with you now in case the sales don’t last and you want to get in on the action.
i hope this doesn’t come back haunt me… the fact that i don’t have a plan for what goes where… this on this wall, that on the other… i just love this neutral, geometric vibe and have been accumulating these accessories over the past few weeks in hopes i can make it all work.
and can we talk about sales? have you heard the whole “you should only buy something on sale that you would be willing to pay full-price for…?” this makes zero sense to me. yes, you can be tricked/psychologically manipulated by sales… i’m sure i have been, but i also know that i would not have paid full price for any of this stuff… and i don’t see how this means i shouldn’t be buying it on sale. i like it all. a lot. that’s why i bought it. on sale. if  you would have paid full price for something, wouldn’t you – in most cases – already own it? everyone has a price they are willing/not willing to pay, right? whatever. [end rant]

diamond shag rug (6’7″x9′) $576 $144
(looks like only 70% off these days… i got it prez day wkend for 75% off)

nesting hexagon shelves $160 $119.99
(this was an impulse buy… i think i ordered it on my iphone while sitting on the bathroom floor during dane’s bath (its too easy) i hope i love them.. i think i will).

magical thinking geo sol mirror $49 $19.99
(give me all of the triangles)

magical thinking wall banner $18 $12

nate berkus fringed wall art $34.99 (+10% off today)
(i got the bigger sized one a while back… i can’t find it anywhere anymore.. sold out?)

the purple stuff you see above, i don’t own.. i threw them in there just to mix in some plum which will be the accent color… there will be a plum accent wall, etc etc.

so i really just need a light (to replace the boob) and black-out shades for the windows. then we just need to find the time to paint and pull it all together. time time time.

to be continued.

(no affiliate links or anything btw)

oh, happy st. patricks day!

poo to blue

this is the story of a really ugly file cabinet. wouldn’t you say this is one of the ugliest file cabinets you ever did see? when we turned the dining room into an office-ish room i felt motivated to help this poor poo brown cabinet realize its potential. i got it for free in a day-after-the yard sale scenario in brewster years ago. the same day i got that free rocking chair (it was a good day). i really love painting free things… i will paint almost anything. this project happened over the course of a few weeks, per usual.

the drawer pulls popped out easily. i spray painted them w/ two coats of white (they were a nickel/silver color).

i sanded the metal a bit to scuff up the finish, then sprayed it with 1 can of kilz primer before hitting it with the paint brush.

the color is barnstable blue by ralph lauren. i brought a settee cushion with me to home depot to match the cabinet to the seats in the music room (you’ll see what i mean).

check out mr. poo cabinet now. he has a whole new outlook on life.
the two masterpieces sitting on top are by dane and, no, they are not for sale (well.. email me.. we might be able to work something out).

new urban outfitters rug. very affordable and a fun new color for the house.

here are the settees i referenced. now the two rooms flow a bit.

i had this wooden tray laying around. i sanded and painted it as well.

so some good progress in the transition from dining room to office…

3 new things

around the holidays especially, i can have quite the impressive tower of packages waiting on my doorstep when i get home from work any given day. not necessarily because i am a raging shopaholic, but because i DON’T go to stores. including the grocery store… twice a month tops. i order everything online from clothes to dog food to a handful of necessities (deodorant, tp, vitamins) and groceries from amazon’s subscribe and save.  late last week, i think i set a personal  best.

i almost died when i saw all this outside my garage.
there are a few other fun things in this pile that i’ll share down the road, but these 3 things made me really happy over the weekend.

this totally rad side table from urban outfitters $179
not cheap, but marked down from $298… maybe i’m easily manipulated by marketing schemes, but i feel like i made out on this purchase. i mean.. are you loosing your whole entire mind over how amazing this little table its?????????!!

these stools from target  $119 for 2
i got these on sale. they will go on sale again… that’s the thing with target. just stalk them for a while. we were without stools for quite some time… since i sold our old ones on craigslist after the big dining room table move. i’ve had my eye on these and finally pulled the trigger when they were 20% off a couple weeks ago. these stools are perfect in every way and i love them. all of them. equally.

this fabric $14/yard
i’ve had this for a while actually… originally was going to make a little curtain for the window above the bed in the basement until i realized its a really stiff indoor/outdoor type fabric. probably not curtain-able. (i know nothing about fabric or sewing.. obvious?). so i randomly folded it and put it on the table and i love it! really just the introduction of the greens in the room is so refreshing to me. i was trapped in grey and blue land for so long with no idea how to escape. this is working for me.

i need to give a little gift to our ups man.. i mean seriously. he is the nicest guy…  and has been working overtime for me and my online shopping habit since i was pregnant with dane. around christmas time, he gave dane this little ups truck. i’m such a jerk, he’s giving us gifts?! what do you tip/gift to your delivery man? cash? a gc?

and ps – snow.

initial nursery thoughts and some sales

i’m having a baby girl in may. did i mention that? it almost feels too good to be true.. like i won the lottery or something.. (even though like two million baby girls are born in the u.s. every year). i am so excited to have this baby. it feels so different from the first time around… just because i now know how awesome it is (and this time i get braid hair and buy tutus). oh man. pinch me. the very early stages of brainstorming the nursery look something like this. naturals and neutrals with a plum accent and a little whimsy here & there.

i have time, so i want to take my time with any purchases… i really shouldn’t need to buy much but man its hard once you start poking around. here are some sales i feel compelled to share.

land of nod changing pad cover i bought this, obviously. what a crazy sale. even with shipping (i hate paying for shipping) it was a great price.

hdc elephant hamper i’ve had my eye on this. i’ll probably buy it at this sale price, but haven’t committed yet.

uo rug all rugs are 25% off. i think this 5×7 would work.. i really like the geometric pattern (you can’t really discern in the pic above) which is pretty much the same as the rug on my wall. i’m going to keep my area rug options open for now though.

pottery barn kids light got excited about this one, then realized its just for the shade.. the base is another $40. but still awesome and maybe worth it.

big boy bed makeover

i have no real before pictures. i’m kicking myself because, you should have seen it… there were weird stickers and strange silly string-like gu all over the headboard and crayon scribbling everywhere. this is after we scrubbed and sanded and sanded and sanded. i found the bed on craigslist for $35. i need to learn to negotiate bc i bet it could have been less. either way, it was solid wood and totally paintable.
did i say “we” sanded? i meant mike sanded… with his poor little broken fingers. he’s the best.

this was the tedious part (the taping). i wanted to paint everything white except the dowels. i’m not sure if this was the best method, but it worked well enough.

we (there i go again with the “we”) used a can of primer and a can or two of white spray paint to cover everything but those dowels.

it was weeks and weeks before this was finally done. mike chipped away at it over the course of a few weekends when the weather agreed, we were actually home, and there was time.

and here’s how it looks… its sort of awesome, don’t you think!? i was so happy with the way it turned out. you know me with the white and natural wood combo. its my favorite.

i glazed over each of the headboard & footboard dowels with the same antiquing stain i used on the ledge in this bedroom, so it matches perfectly.

goodness my bed styling could use a lot of work. its totally bugging me looking at these pictures. everyone knows i’m supposed to drape a couple woven blankets on top of the comforter ever so imperfectly so that the bed is just begging for you to crawl in… i’ll be sure to do that when i take the final photos of this new bedroom 🙂

i came across this crib from the honest co’s the collective recently. totally the same vibe as our bed, right?! can you believe they are all sold out? i really do love the honest company.. they gave a crib to a family in need for every crib sold.

the plan is for this bed to be riley’s – or any other little person’s who visits.. there is a packnplay under the bed and a queen bed at the other end of the room, so it will be perfect for when my sister’s family visits (once her new baby boy is here in march!). i just need to finish decorating and making it cozy, then it will be all ready for them when they visit for christmas!!!

unspoonifying

this wall.

it needed some big, colorful art – so that you got a peak of it from the top of the steps.

big art for small money is not an easy thing to pull off.
enter: the spoons.

these huge 55×22″ spoon canvases were $40 each at ikea, which is way less than blank canvases i saw at craft stores or on the internets.

(this is best comparable i could find… its slightly bigger and $120 on amazon. slightly smaller at $60).

so i bought a couple spoon canvases and covered those spoons right up. sorry jo de pear.

i set-up shop outside with my apprentice.

and painted away with no real plan. i just used two paint brushes and the three colors (two green samples and some left over blue from the dining room) and brushed on overlapping sections.

i wanted really obvious brush marks and a random blend of the three colors. once the canvas was covered and i thought it was looking decent. i forced myself to put the brush down and walk away. less is more.

i asked my loving husband to build a frame for each of the two canvases. just a realllly simple frame.
then i stained them with my trusty antiquing mixture and popped the canvas right in.

amazing right? i’m a regular van gogh.

next came my instagram masterpiece. i don’t think i photographed the process, but i literally just applied a coat of mod podge to the canvas, stuck on all the photos, then another coat of mod podge over the top the next day. easy.

confession: i don’t love the instagram collage. it could be better. ever since i finished i’ve seen so many versions of this and they look so much better when the squares are spaced out evenly with a white border separating each photo. (this is what i mean if you are curious). i sort of overlapped them a bit randomly to make them all fit and it doesn’t look as nice.

but overall i love the bright, happy, personal addition to this wall and being greeted by it every time we come down here.

and it was satisfying creating these big statement pieces for under $100.

overdue finished basement before & afters

i was working on posting some pictures of an art project i did for a wall in the basement, when i realized i never really posted a finished-finished basement update. i tried to a while ago, but the post is all busted now and the pictures don’t show up (a little example of my advanced technological blogging skillz).

so here are those before and afters. this was the biggest, most expensive process we have been through as homeowners (by far) and it was so rewarding. when we moved in, this was a moldy mess.. we had to have a professional remediation just for it to be safe to be in our house (to the tune of $2k to un-finish the basement.. fun!) but now we have this huge new living space and its just nice knowing its all clean and dry.

the new bedroom (you can get a peak through the doorway above) is in pretty good shape as well. i’ll share some pictures of that soon.

the only furniture we have bought for down here (still to this day) is the black craigslisted couch, the two side tables from target and the little rocker from amazon.

the rug is from amazon too if that counts… the bulldog is from hinsdale.

the wall color is benjamin moore revere pewter.

this is what we’re looking like now that the plastic has invaded… in need of some toy storage! but i’m in no rush. i think we need some time to live down here to see what the best layout and use of space will be. we want to have a little exercise area and an art station somewhere for dane…

that’s all for now, more soon!

a quick knock-off

it all started in 2009 when i made my own centerpieces for my wedding… with lots of help from my mom… and they involved 16″ diameter mirrors that my mom accumulated from yard sales and craft stores and other mom-ish sources. 5 years later, i still had a number of these laying around.
so then i see these in a west elm catalogue.. you know those catalogues that they send you DAILY.

easy. i even had the perfect spray paint left over from the rods holding my new rug-on-the-wall creation.

but how to affix to the wall? i considered a number of options involving wood, gorilla glue, nails, and picture hanging hardware. it felt a bit messy and risky so i procrastinated a while.

enter the disc. i stumbled upon these things in a blog where someone was explaining the art of hanging plates on the wall. they worked perfectly!

and my wall is complete!

the sunburst mirror is from target and the little shelves on the other side are supposed to be square floating shelves, but i tilted them diagonally and now they are much more interesting.

standard bull dog position in this one, and can you spot the hidden stephanie?
